The Year-Round CNY Home Exterior Cleaning Checklist

Central New York's seasons are extreme and distinct, and each one does something different to your home's exterior. Here is the checklist CNY homeowners use to stay ahead of it.

Spring: Post-Winter Exterior Recovery

Spring is the most important exterior cleaning window in Central New York. A full CNY winter leaves a layer of road salt residue, mineral staining, and months of accumulated grime on every surface that faces the street. The sooner after the last frost you address it, the less the residue has had time to bond to surfaces.

Windows After Lake-Effect Season

Exterior windows in CNY accumulate road salt overspray all winter, especially on the street-facing side of the house. Clean both interior and exterior glass in late April or May, after pollen season peaks, so the cleaning holds longer. Get the frames, tracks, and screens as part of the same job. Organic material in the tracks damages the seals over time.

House Washing for Algae and Mildew

North-facing siding in CNY picks up algae and mildew over the winter, particularly in shaded zones where the snow melted slowly. A soft wash in spring removes it before it has fully established and discolors the siding. Waiting until summer means the growth has had an additional growing season to deepen.

Driveway and Walkway Pressure Washing

Road salt runoff and freeze-thaw cycles stain and pit concrete over CNY winters. A spring pressure wash, with pre-treatment on heavy oil or rust staining, restores the surface and removes the salt residue that continues to degrade concrete if left through summer.

Summer: Mid-Season Maintenance

Summer in Central New York is relatively mild for exterior cleaning purposes, but a few tasks earn their place on the checklist.

Window Check After Pollen Season

If you did your spring window cleaning before pollen season peaked (before mid-May in most years), a second exterior-only clean in June or July keeps the glass clear through the summer entertaining season. Interior glass typically stays clean between full cleanings.

Deck and Patio Washing

Composite and wood decks pick up a dark mildew stain by midsummer, particularly in shaded sections. A pressure wash or soft wash in June restores the surface before it deepens. Cleaning before July 4th means your outdoor space looks its best for the peak of the season.

Gutter Inspection After Summer Storms

CNY thunderstorms in July and August can deposit large quantities of debris in gutters in a single event. If you notice overflow during or after a heavy storm, it is worth having the gutters checked. A partial blockage that causes overflow in summer can become an ice dam in winter.

Fall: Gutter Cleaning and Pre-Winter Prep

Fall is the second major exterior cleaning window in CNY. The goal in fall is to protect your investment before the freeze: make sure gutters are clear so winter ice cannot build behind them, and surfaces are clean before salt and ice damage compounds.

Gutter Cleaning After Full Leaf Drop

The best time to clean gutters in Central New York is after the leaves are fully down, typically in late October or early November depending on your neighborhood's tree cover. Cleaning too early means a second partial fill from the remainder of the leaf drop. We clean gutters by hand, bag the debris, flush the system, and check every downspout so there are no blockages going into freeze season.

Final Window Cleaning Before Thanksgiving

A fall window cleaning in October or early November sets you up for the holiday season and gives you clear glass for the lower sun angle of late fall and winter. Exterior glass cleaned in fall tends to stay cleaner through winter because the algae and pollen load is minimal until spring.

Soft Wash Before Winter

If your siding picked up algae or mildew through the summer, fall is the second opportunity to address it. Clearing organic growth before freeze means it cannot continue to degrade siding or caulk through the winter when you cannot address it.

Winter: What to Monitor

Professional exterior cleaning is not safe to schedule during CNY winters. Water freezes on contact with surfaces below about 40°F. But there are things to watch so spring cleaning addresses what actually matters.

Ice Dams

Ice dams form at roof edges when heat from the attic melts snow that then refreezes at the colder eave. They are a sign of insulation or ventilation issues, not a cleaning problem, but the water that backs up behind them can get into the house and leave staining on interior walls that looks like an exterior problem. If you see ice dams consistently in the same spot, it is worth investigating the insulation before the next winter.

Gutter Overflow Patterns

Note where your gutters overflow when snow melts in mid-winter warm spells. That tells you which sections need attention in spring: either because they were not cleaned thoroughly in fall, or because the pitch or the hanger placement is off.
